Baby Name Stealing

I don't know if any of you have had this problem, but it is really irritating me the longer we go on being IF. Twice in this year, we have had someone in our family freaking steal baby names that we were thinking of.  Yes, yes, I know, we don't even have a baby yet, but come on!  We've been planning for 4 years and we've carefully thought these things out.  And, then, bam, someone has # 3 or 4, and willy nilly nabs our carefully thought of name out of the sky.  Ugh!  And yes, we could still use the name, I guess, if we wanted, but everyone in the family will think of the first kid as the "real" one.  I feel like George from Seinfeld when he thought of "Seven" and his friends stole it.  I know how you feel, George!

  1. That is the worst!!! We've chosen to name the future JellyBellies names from our family, so we really don't care if our friends copy us (no one has, yet!).

  2. I completely know how you feel and being someone who adores picking names, it is the worst. Every name when I started this journey that I thought would be unique because it was not common is now popular. And now our one lone boy name is headed in that direction too.

  3. I know exactly what you mean! I actually have a list written down with names, and the DATES that I put them on the list (you know, that way when given a hard time for copying, I can say, I picked that name first.) Wow, how sad is that? :(

  4. We had a similar situation in my family a few years ago. I told my SIL about a name I liked and she said "Well we like that one too, so you better hope you have a kid before we do!" (They already had 4 at that point). Now, she was kidding and at that point we didn't know we had any IF problems, but I was still pretty upset! Then awhile later when she got pregnant and we were having IF problems, I was SUPER worried that she'd steal our name. They didn't end up using it, but it made me really upset! IF women have to sacrifice so much, and this is just one more hurt. So unfair.

I don't think Rebecca's idea is sad at all! I wish I had thought of that.

  6. You are not alone there! Hubs and I keep our names under a tight lid, but the one he likes for a girl is becoming super popular. I hear names a lot since I work with babies, and there have been a ton of our girls name lately. I think we might end up spelling it differently-even though I vowed never to be that Mom, LoL. Oh how IF changes things!

  7. Oh, you are so brave for name picking! I haven't believed that I'll actually have kids (due to IF) to actually think about picking names. I feel like I'd be getting my hopes up.
Now that we are on the waiting list for adoption, I don't think I could entertain that idea until someone picks us.
Rebecca's idea sounds fabulous! I'm gonna do that once we start picking names too. :-)
