Glucose Test

I have my next OB appointment this afternoon, and I seem to recall him mentioning that they would do the glucose test the next appointment.  What is the point of that?  If I had diabetes, wouldn't I be heavy?  And, does it matter if I'm having a planned c-section?  I've read that the problem with gestational diabetes is the risk of a big baby.  Well, if it's being cut out of me anyway, then that's not an issue.   Plus, I don't want to pollute my body with a bunch of sugar (despite the ginormous cotton candy picture, I only ate a couple of bites).  Can you refuse this test?  Is there a real reason for me to have it?

  1. Yes, you should get tested. It is a myth that only overweight woman have gestational diabetes. You likely do not have it, but if you do, it puts you at a higher risk of premature labor and preeclampsia, which is dangerous for both you and the baby. Babies of normal birth weight are healthier, regardless of whether you have a c-section. Also, it would put you at risk for developing diabetes post-pregnancy. It's a simple test with no lasting effect, so I don't see any reason why you would want to refuse it.

  2. Everything Anonymous said is correct. My friend had gestational diabetes and she was at a perfect weight.

  3. If you do have problems with gestational diabetes your baby is at risk for blood sugar problems at birth that will land him/her in the NICU.

  4. Yup, I agree with the other comments..you can get GD even if you are at a normal weight, and it can cause other complications besides just the baby being too big for a vaginal birth.

The test really isn't too bad. The drink doesn't taste too awful, it's just VERY overly sugary. Quick blood draw an hour or so later, and you are done. They should be able to use the butterfly needle.

  5. Of course you can refuse the test. What are the other symptoms of GD?
